Oracle Database - Grid Infrastructure / RAC 12c (r1/r2) Installation (and more) - Part 1 (Linux Install - OEL 7.1)

In this and the next few blogs I am going to discuss installation of Grid Infrastrucutre (RAC) 12c and few other interesting things related to RAC 12C.
The steps are similar for r1 and r2, I am doing r1 install here.
However, in case of r2, the Disk requirement is about 40GB usable in the OCR Disk group.

The First Step is going to be plain old VirtualBox Installation
You can download the latest version from here - https://www.virtualbox.org/

Download the version as per the host OS you are running
I will be using Windows Version as part of this discussion

Also, I will be doing Oracle Enterprise Linux Installation as part of this blog.
OS Version - OEL 7.1
You can download this from - https://edelivery.oracle.com

Start Virtual Box and click on New (My version of Vbox is 5.14)
Give Name of the Virtual Machine, select memory to be good enough say 3GB for start.
(We can always change it in future)

Click on create and hence you will be directed to disk selection.
Select a reasonable disk size say 35 GB and choose dynamically allocated to extend the size as per the usage. (this helps in saving space on your base machine)

Now with that done you will see a Virtual machine with the name you had given in your VirtualBox home screen.
Click on settings and select 2 as processor count

Enable all 4 adapters and select internal network - you can give any name for the network name
I have given in1 - in4 (this is network used for the virtual machines to talk to each other)

Insert the Oracle Enterprise Linux 7.1 DVD as shown

Finally a good practice to have a shared folder where your binaries are.

Now let us start the instalaltion

Select Install Linux 7.1

Installation Start

  1. Choose --> English as the language
  2. Do the following
  3. Select Time Zone According to your country/timezone
  4. Select Server with GUI with DNS Server Installation
  5. Select Automatic Partitioning
  6. Disable Kdump
  7. Set Hostname - rac1.localdomain
  8. You can have all the network interfaces down (we will start them up later)

Click on Begin Installation after modifying the settings as described above

Once the installation completes click on reboot
After reboot accept the license agreement and select if you want to connect to ULN (if you are unsure do not connect to ULN)
Follow the basic configuration that follows
Create any dummy user (do not create Oracle user as of now)
Finally you are ready with your Linux Server (one machine)

In the next blog I will be discussing configuring this Linux Machine for Oracle Installation.
